Part 2: Are we more productive during the World Cup?

Day 2 of the World Cup!!!

Another day of being a ninja, sneakily watching the World Cup during Hive hours. Also, I decided to spice it up a little! I went to get a bag of nuts as my snacks for the three matches.. (what's watching football without a bag of nuts ya?). What an amazing day it was for football fans, being treated to three matches on a Friday!

[caption id="attachment_873" align="alignnone" width="1727"] Look at the boarder-less window! No one will suspect anything at all![/caption]

I am going to continue my quest to find more football fans out there and I am so excited to share my findings today, click here to read part 1. Author's note: We take privacy very seriously at Hive. The data below is an aggregate across all Hive users. We never access or use any individual data of Hive customers.

Oh yes, you know what's even more amazing? If John, CEO of Hive, decided to do a productivity check he wouldn't even be suspicious of me watching the match! This is because productivity on a Friday is always lower than compared to the rest of the days (ha ha ha, winning John at his game).

The findings

Today started out really slow, with the first two games seeing goals only at the 90th minutes onwards. Then, things escalate! We see a 6 goals thriller at the last game of the day. How will these three matches translate to productivity in the office?

Game 2: Uruguay v.s Egypt

Game Start: Productivity started out slow. With only 1 action completed on average at the start of the whistle! This is a 49% decrease than compared to regular Friday Halftime: In the first game of the World Cup, I was so stoked to see that productivity increased during half-time. It is the same for this game, the average actions completed per user increased by a whopping 614% since the start of the game. I do not know the sorcery that is involved in this, but 7.14 actions were completed on average by a user (compared to 4.04 on a regular Friday). Second Half: When the game resumed, Hive activities saw a dip, with an average of 1.25 actions completed by a user (83% dip).

After whistle: As usual, productivity increased by 54% since the game ended.

That's pretty much the same trend as the first game!

Game 3: Iran v.s Morocco (it gets more interesting!)

This is interesting, productivity level in this game follows the same trend as game 1 and game 2. However, 15 minutes after the game resumed, there was a rise in Hive activity level. I wonder.. could this be due to the boring and slow game? (Come on... if you watched the game, you know what I am talking about) I find myself minimizing the stream and started to do a little more work during the game.

Game 4: Spain v.s Portugal

How can anyone not watch this game? This is the game that I am most excited about!

Game Start: On a regular Friday, 9.76 actions are completed on average by a user. With Ronaldo and Costa battling out, Hive saw a dip of 81% average actions completed. That's only an average of 1.8 actions completed on the most productive Friday hour! Halftime: As usual, we see the same trend in every game, productivity increase during half time (although not as much as compared to the other games). Why? I am not too sure either, however, I really couldn't focus on working at all after the first half. It was an intense first half, with Ronaldo grabbing that long-range goal just before the half time whistle. I think he grabbed my productivity drive too. 15 minutes into Second Half: Surprise surprise, productivity dipped after half-time and it did not come back up at all during the game! 2 goals from Spain killed all the working vibes I guess? After Whistle: I was so sure that I would get fired up after the game and some work done, but nope... it is the same for Hive's users. There was a 55% decrease in productivity ever since the game ended.

Final thoughts:

What an exciting day it was!

Just a quick search on World Cup productivity on Google shows how much a company is losing during World Cup due to lost productivity. Food for thought here? I wonder what would John do if he knew about this... Flexible working hours for me during World Cup?

I am impressed. There are so many stories that you can tell with productivity data.

The current business trend is definitely on productivity and the future of work, and this is the capability of Hive Analytics. What does your productivity tool tells you?
