The Pleasure of Figuring Things Out in Life

“In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.” ― Robert Frost

Life is a labyrinth — a complex and sometimes confusing network of paths or obstacles, much like a maze.

When facing a labyrinth, there is often no single correct path to take, and it may be easy to get lost or confused.

Everyone must use their judgment, reason, logic and problem-solving skills to find their way through.

There is no one set path. Our experiences are unique to us.

The other news is: life is not a preparation for another life.

There are no manuals.

But there are an overwhelming number of variables. Each of us has to figure out how to navigate this labyrinth as best we can on our own.

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all,” says Oscar Wilde.

We are all responsible for finding our way through the challenges and complexities of life, and we must rely on our abilities (limited knowledge) to navigate the labyrinth of our individual experiences.

While we may learn from others, read about the experiences of others, apply lessons from history or get support from others along the way, ultimately, it is up to us to chart our course and find our way through the twists and turns of life’s challenges.

We can choose to view life as a challenge or an opportunity. If we view it as a challenge, we may feel stressed and overwhelmed.

However, if we view it as an opportunity, we can embrace the uncertainty and excitement of life. We can choose to make the most of our experiences and learn from them.

The pleasure of figuring things out

Richard P. Feynman, a great scientist and physicist of our time, observed,“The pleasure of finding things out is worth more than the pleasure of being right.” Feynman believed the joy of discovery is one of the most rewarding experiences in life.

“I have approximate answers and possible beliefs and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything and there are many things I don’t know anything about, such as whether it means anything to ask why we’re here, and what the question might mean.”

Feynman recognised the complexity and unpredictability of the world and encouraged people to embrace the chaos and uncertainty of life.

He believed that by embracing the messiness of life, we could cultivate a sense of wonder and curiosity that is essential for a rich and meaningful life. He thought the world is a “dynamic mess of jiggling things if you look at it right.”

You can never fully anticipate the next reality

One of the most remarkable aspects of life is its unpredictability.

Author Tony Schwartz explains:

“Let go of certainty. The opposite isn’t uncertainty. It’s openness, curiosity and a willingness to embrace paradox, rather than choose up sides. The ultimate challenge is to accept ourselves exactly as we are, but never stop trying to learn and grow.”

No matter how much we plan, prepare, or anticipate, we cannot predict with certainty what will happen tomorrow.

There are countless variables and factors that can influence the outcome of any situation, and even small changes can have a significant impact.

Despite our best efforts to plan and control our lives, we can never fully anticipate what will happen next.

The uncertainties of life can be both exhilarating and frightening.

On one hand, it allows for surprises and opportunities that can enrich our lives and bring us joy.

On the other hand, it can lead to ambiguity, anxiety, and fear, as we are never fully in control of what happens to us.

It’s a realisation that is both exhilarating and terrifying, but it ultimately makes life so exciting and meaningful.

Despite its unpredictability, life is also full of possibilities and potential. Each day presents new opportunities for growth, learning, and connection, and we can choose how we respond.

We can cultivate resilience, adaptability, and openness to change, which can help us navigate the twists and turns of life’s journey with greater ease and grace.

We are all part of a larger experience

Another important feature of life is its interconnectedness.

We are all part of a more extensive web of relationships and systems, and our actions and choices have ripple effects that extend far beyond ourselves.

Recognizing this interconnectedness can help us cultivate compassion, empathy, and a sense of responsibility for the world around us.

The interconnectedness of life can also teach us important lessons about our place in the world. It reminds us that we are not separate from the natural world but rather a part of it.

It can also inspire us to adopt more meaningful, mindful and responsible ways of living. When we recognize our place within the web of life, we can begin to see ourselves as part of something larger than ourselves.

We can connect with a deeper sense of purpose and meaning as we work towards the greater good and contribute to the well-being of others.

Interconnectedness can be both a source of strength and vulnerability.

It allows for cooperation, collaboration, and mutual support, as people work together to achieve common goals.

On the other hand, it means the actions of others or a group of people can profoundly impact others, which can lead to conflict, inequality, and injustice.

All life is impermanent

“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” ― Heraclitus

An important reality of life is its impermanence.

Everything in the natural world, including events, emotions, and people, constantly changes and evolves.

Nothing remains the same forever, and everything is subject to the forces of impermanence. Everything is subject to change and decay, including our bodies and minds.

It can be a source of fear and anxiety, but it can also be a powerful reminder to live in the present moment and appreciate life’s beauty and richness.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance,” says Alan Wilson Watts.

The impermanence of life is both beautiful and challenging. It allows for growth, transformation, and renewal as old forms give way to new ones.

That means we are never stuck in any one state or situation, and there is always the potential for change and growth.

On the other hand, impermanence can also be challenging, as we often become attached to things, people, or situations that we wish could remain constant.

When these things inevitably change or disappear, it can lead to feelings of loss, grief, and uncertainty.

However, recognizing the impermanence of life can also help us cultivate a more profound sense of gratitude, appreciation, and mindfulness.

When we recognize that everything is temporary, we can learn to savor and appreciate the present moment rather than taking things for granted or assuming they will always be there.

The impermanence of life also teaches us important lessons about letting go and embracing change.

When we learn to accept and adapt to the constant changes of life, we can cultivate a greater sense of resilience, flexibility, and peace.

In summary, life is indeed one crazy nonlinear experiment, but it is also a rich and meaningful journey that offers endless opportunities for growth, discovery, and connection.

So embrace the uncertainty and enjoy the ride!

Despite the unpredictability and complexity of life, people still strive to find meaning, purpose, and happiness in their experiences.

They navigate the challenges and uncertainties with resilience, adaptability, and creativity and sometimes even find joy and beauty in the midst of chaos.
